AeroGardens are specifically designed to make growing flowers, vegetables, herbs, and salad greens easy to do, at home and indoors! They’ve accomplished this by creating an indoor hydroponic garden that fits on a countertop like any other kitchen appliance. This means you can keep fresh mints and herbs right there where you make your food – it doesn’t get any fresher than that!
How does an AeroGarden work? Part of what makes the AeroGarden work and feel like an appliance is the seed pod. Instead of having to mess with bags of potting soil and keeping stacks of pots in the pantry like back in the day, AeroGardens use seed pods that are specially designed to fit in the garden. This ensures your plants receive the proper amount of water and root in as they should. We’ve written a great review post highlighting the best AeroGarden Countertop units that’s worth checking out if you’re in the market for one.
Each seed pod consists of a few basic parts.

The grow basket is the part that holds the grow medium, and is commonly called a net pot in hydroponic systems. Pre-seeded pods will come with a grow label
All of these seed pod assortments are official Aerogarden products and represent only a few of the more popular seed pod options that are available.

Growing this entire selection will bring a beautiful aroma along with the convenience of having these herbs ready for the plucking, as needed. Aerogarden Seed Pod FAQ
Can you make your own seed pods for an Aerogarden?
Yes! It is absolutely possible to make your own seed pods for use in Aerogarden systems. For the best results, it’s always a good idea to stick with official Aerogarden products whenever possible. This helps ensure proper fit and function of the seed pod, and avoids causing any unintentional damage to the unit.
There are alternative units available, but you should be aware that these have emerged from import markets to compete with AeroGarden’s design. We can’t attest to the reliability of these spinoff products, as most of them haven’t been around long enough to earn much of a reputation. We will say that official AerGarden seed pod kits and pre-seeded pods are inexpensive, and it really isn’t worth the trouble to try and find an imported “bargain”.
Listed below are a few of the best options for putting together your own seed pods and for re-using the ones you’ve already got. Fortunately, re-use is as simple as popping the lid off and replacing the grow medium (after giving everything a good washing, of course).
AeroGarden Grow Anything Seed Pod Kit, 12-count
Aerogarden’s “Grow Anything” Seed Pod kit was put together to satisfy the more advanced gardener with an interest in using the countertop hydroponic unit to grow seeds that might not be found in the commercially-prepared seed pods. This Seed Pod kit includes everything you need to host a dozen plants – 12 Grow Sponges, Grow Domes, Grow Baskets, and Pod Labels, as well as a 3 oz bottle of specially-formulated Liquid Nutrients. Also included is a Growing Guide with step-by-step instructions for assembling and disassembling the seed pods.
AeroGarden Sponges (50-Pack)
This is a 50-count of the pure Canadian Sphagnum Peat sponges that Aerogarden uses in their own seed pod assemblies. This chemically inert segment of peat moss is formed to fit perfectly inside Aerogarden seed pods.
These sponges can be used with seed pods you already have, such as those that came with your Aerogarden, as well as a “Grow Anything” kit like the one featured above.
AeroGarden Compatible Eco-Friendly Coco Coir Sponges (50 Pack)
Some growers prefer coco-coir to peat moss because as long as you can manage the pH levels successfully, your plants will typically grow faster in coco-coir than peat. If you know you would prefer using coco-coir in your Aerogarden seed pods, you’re in luck!
The Urban Leaf decided to put these bundles together after realizing that there were so few options on the market and has stayed receptive to the needs of Aerogarden growers ever since.
How Long do Aerogarden Seed Pods last?
If stored somewhere that is dark, cool, and dry, Aerogarden seed pods can be expected to last up to 2 years or more. Warmth and humidity are the factors most detrimental to the shelf-life of Aerogarden seed pods, and will cause them to mildew or mold, or possibly germinate prematurely if touched by light. This will render them unusable and will require the medium’s disposal and a proper cleaning of the seed pod housing.
Can you reuse an Aerogarden Seed Pod?
Yes! You can absolutely re-use an AeroGarden seed pod, no matter whether it has been grown and harvested or simply dried out and expired. There are a few things you should do first, however, to ensure the optimal health of your newly crafted seed pod.
Follow these simple steps to be certain your pre-seeded pods will work just like the ones you buy from AeroGarden:
‣ Dispose of any old growing medium and/or leftover roots
‣ Gently the net pot and lid using warm soapy water and a gentle scrub brush
‣ Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry
‣ Insert new replacement sponge or coco coir insert
‣ Insert your seeds into your seed pod’s new grow medium
‣ Install your new seed pods into your AeroGarden unit
‣ Program your AeroGarden accordingly and watch them grow!
That’s really all there is to re-using AeroGarden seed pods – there’s nothing to it at all!
